This illustration started as a figure study, but before getting the pose drawn, I felt like it was something I could be creative with. The pose made me feel like she was stepping playfully – so I decided to turn it into a character stepping on a Piano. During the thought process, I was thinking about poster design from the 20’s to the 50’s, and J C Leyendecker’s character style. Though I can’t paint like him I wanted to try and capture a little of his characterisation. There was some minor battles with elements like how her dress should look, her shadow placement and size, and how many small objects to place around her to build up the scene for visual interest and story/context, without being too much. It was a balancing act that I felt worked just right.
